COACHING FROM HEAVEN > CHILDREN IN CHURCH > Personal Experience from KellyAs I see it, the problem isn't with the kids at all. It's with those people to whom God has given them. When I was an infant, my mom and dad attended different Masses on Sunday. Why? So one could tend me while the other attended the celebration. I expect it was a nuisance for them but then so many things about parenthood are inconvenient. When I became four, I guess, or maybe five, I got to attend and participate in the Sunday celebration with both parents. (As an aside, I'm sure that many times during my infancy my parents took me with them to Mass...in fact, I know they did because my mom told me they did...but for the most part the separate attendences were the norm.) I remember how so I looked forward to this event! My mom and dad impressed upon me that I was a "big girl" and there was no question that I would be expected to behave as one. Prior to the "big day" my parents actually "rehearsed" me in what to expect at Mass. I remember particularly my mother explaining to me in as much detail as she could what happened at the Consecration -- and that the whole idea was to prepare myself throughout the Mass for that very Big Deal. Today I'm involved with the "wee ones" at my parish. We "rehearse" the liturgy and discuss animatedly what really happens at the Consecration. They think -- and they're right -- that it's awesome. Certainly awesome enough to pay attention and keep quiet. :-) Believe or not, at age 46, I still remember the first time I participated in the Eucharistic Celebration. I was overwhelmed, awestruck and couldn't wait to do it again. I think my mom and day had a lot to do with this. Kelly <-----still feels the same way ;-)
